Description of Study Area

Boundries

The West Side Park neighborhood on the Central Ward of Newark is the larger area of our study project. Within this larger context, the Project Community developed a research plan to identify the strengths and characteristics of the business community in this area. The boundaries of the study area consists by the commercial corridors of South Orange Avenue to the north and Springfield Avenue to the South, Bergen Street to the east and South 20th Street to the west. The total area of the neighborhood is about 470 acres (0.73 sq. mile). According to the physical survey conducted and the city tax records, along the commercial corridors the total number of properties is 331, with about 135 of them being located along South Orange Avenue, 183 along Springfield Avenue, and 13 along adjacent streets. Furthermore, the total number of business properties is 166, with 90 of them located on Springfield Avenue and 76 on South Orange Avenue.

The physical survey consisted of a walking reconnaissance of the study area. Data obtained from the physical survey range from building and street conditions, number and locale of properties, match tax records with business names, identify what changes occurred in the composition of the businesses in the area, and identify the distribution of the bus stops and routes.
