Safe Routes Scoop
Second Round SRTS Grants Awarded

On December 22, 2008, the NJ Department of Transportation awarded $4 million in federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS) grants to 33 communities across the state. NJDOT received a total of 263 proposals for $44.5 million in the program's second round of SRTS funding grants.

NJDOT’s 2008 Safe Routes to School initiative will provide grants for projects in 33 municipalities in amounts ranging from $8,000 to $300,000. Twenty infrastructure projects were funded at over $3.5 million and eleven non-infrastructure projects received over $430,000. The grants will be used for local projects designed to encourage children to walk and bike to school, including the creation of safer walkways, bikeways and street crossings near schools.

The first round of funds for fiscal year 2007, were awarded to 29 communities.  There were 20 infrastructure grants totaling $3.7 million and 23 non-infrastructure grants totaling $473,000.  At this point, most of the grantees have started their programs and one grantee is already finished. Nearly all the grantees have stated that they expect to be done with their funded programs by the end of the current school year.
