Complete Streets in Montclair

Marking a first in the state, the mayor and council of Montclair, New Jersey unanimously voted in favor of a resolution to establish a municipal Complete Streets Policy at their October 6, 2009 meeting. As the first New Jersey municipality to adopt a Complete Streets policy, Montclair will ensure that in new construction and reconstruction, travel by pedestrians, bicyclists, public transit, and motorized vehicles and their passengers shall be safely accommodated. The resolution is a step closer to ensuring that streets perform at their greatest potential for access and mobility. The policy is currently under development by the township engineer and is expected to be available in 2010. View the resolution text here: http://www.montclairnjusa.org/

New Jersey Recognized as School Wellness Leader

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have recently recognized New Jersey for its accomplishments in improving wellness and nutrition for young people.  The CDC identified New Jersey as one of the 10 states with the highest percentage of secondary schools that do not sell food and beverages with less nutritional value from vending machines, etc. The enactment of state law and regulations requiring all New Jersey public and private schools that participate in federally funded child

nutrition programs to adopt the NJSchool Nutrition / Wellness Policy is credited with the state’s improved standing. In addition, New Jersey maintains rigorous state academic standards for Comprehensive Health and Physical Education which require districts to incorporate nutrition education and physical activity into the local curriculum.  For more information about New Jersey’s recognition as a School Nutrition Leader, please see the official NJDOE press release at:

Overcoming Policy Barriers in Netcong

Schools and school districts play a big part in establishing a culture of bicycling and walking to school. School policies that encourage and support bicycling and walking can substantially boost a community’s Safe Routes To School (SRTS) program while a policy that discourages or prohibits bicycling or walking can effectively stop a SRTS
