The National Center for Bicycling and Walking has released an updated version of their Increasing Physical Activity Guidebook. The free publication titled Increasing Physical Activity Through Community Design -- A Guide for Public Health Practitioners and Livable Community Advocates has been thoroughly revamped from the 2002 original.
The original Guide was one of the first mainstream publications to make the connection between community design and levels of physical activity and health. The guide went a step further by showing how to make the changes needed to start reversing the alarming trend of obesity and physical inactivity. The 2010 guide serves as a capstone for a decade of field work by the Active Living Resource Center, incorporating many of the lessons learned from providing technical assistance to communities, many of them with low resources and high needs.
The revised guide can be downloaded at http://www.bikewalk.org/pdfs/2010/IPA_full.pdf.
