Safe Routes Scoop
Welcome

Welcome to the sixth issue of New Jersey Walks and Bikes, a newsletter for anyone interested in bicycle and pedestrian issues. In this, our summer edition, we want to inspire and encourage you to get out there, enjoy the fresh air and walk and bike throughout our beautiful state! First, we bring you a story that highlights the work of two individuals who partnered with diverse stakeholders in their community to successfully develop the Lawrence Hopewell Trail. When completed, the trail will span 20 miles, offering links to employment centers, schools, parks and other destinations in Mercer County. We also focus on the topic of bicycle safety in this edition, presenting the laws governing biking in our state as well as offering safe cycling tips.

An article spotlighting senior walkability is also presented, which discusses some of the obstacles to safe senior walking and offers strategies for creating better walking environments for our aging population. NJDOT is committed to this issue and we are proud of the recent senior walkability workshops that have been held in the communities of Madison, Lincroft and Caldwell. On the other end of the age spectrum, we focus on the Asbury Park Bike Church, a youth “earn-a-bike” initiative designed to provide opportunities for children of this urban community to enjoy the outdoors and the benefits of bicycling. Created by a local resident, this exciting program runs primarily through donations and offers Asbury Park youngsters the opportunity to earn a bike while learning the ABC’s of bike safety and repair in a safe and supportive environment.

In this issue we spotlight two new technologies – the Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon and the high-intensity activated crosswalk (“HAWK”) Beacon Signals – that are designed to aid pedestrians and bicyclists, specifically at midblock crossings and other uncontrolled locations where full traffic signals may not be warranted. Finally, in our “News in Brief” section, we highlight timely stories that include: resources to help you find available bike education programs/classes; updates on projects underway and/or successfully completed under the Governor’s Pedestrian Safety Initiative; and an update on the enactment into law of Assembly bill A-2731, which gives municipalities and counties more power to manage local streets and roadways.
As always, we thank you for your interest and support in making New Jersey a safe walkable and bikeable state and best wishes for an enjoyable summer season!
