Route 30 (Absecon Boulevard)/ North Carolina Avenue Atlantic City, Atlantic County
The Office of Bicycle and Pedestrian Programs completed a Feasibility Assessment for the location of a proposed pedestrian bridge over Route 30 in Atlantic City. Because of the high volume of pedestrians crossing Route 30, it was critical to establish and analyze crossing patterns and future development locations including a proposed future overpass from the Brigantine Connector to the North Beach. The Assessment found that a very high volume of pedestrians were crossing mid-block along Route 30 and not at the intersection with North Carolina Avenue where existing crosswalks, pedestrian signals and a crossing guard were in place. On a typical weeknight, between 3 pm and 7 pm, 355 pedestrians and 45 bicyclists were counted. Over a three year period, 5 pedestrian and 3 bicycle crashes (no fatalities) were recorded along Route 30 in this area.
The conclusion of the study was that, due to the location of the heaviest crossings, the many unknowns regarding the overpass connector and future land development, an at-grade pedestrian crossing should be constructed east of North Carolina Avenue. The safety improvements included installing pedestrian signals, a median refuge, 1360 linear feet of sidewalks, curb ramps, pedestrian crossing warning
