The Camden GreenWay:
Linking People and Nature

According to John Boyle, BCGP’s advocacy director, the effort began in 2008 when Sarah Clark Stuart of BCGP organized a campaign called “Complete the Schuylkill River Trail” that united local organizations, each sponsoring small sections of the trail, into a single entity. With funding from the William Penn Foundation and help from the PEC, Clark and her allies put together the TIGER grant application to help fund the Schuylkill River Trail.

“Knowing that there would be a great deal of competition for the $110 million in TIGER funds, it soon became apparent that they needed more partners to strengthen the grant application,” Boyle said.

The Philadelphia group contacted CFDA’s Gordon who proposed adding the Camden GreenWay to the TIGER grant application. Due to prior planning conducted by the CFDA and CGI, many of the Camden GreenWay segments were already close to being “shovel ready,” a critical factor in the TIGER grants program. The three sections of the Camden GreenWay awarded TIGER funds are:

  • Crosswalks and bike lanes on Pearl Street between the Ben Franklin Bridge walkway stairs and the waterfront promenade
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard Bikeway - bike lanes west of Haddon Avenue and a sidepath east of Haddon Avenue connecting the 11th St sidepath (Admiral Wilson Boulevard Path) to

   Riverside Drive at the Adventure

  • Pine Street Corridor Bicycle Boulevard - Connecting the Cooper River Park Path System to the Camden Waterfront

Linking people with nature
According to CGI, the GreenWay will serve approximately 50,000 people along with most of Camden’s neighborhoods, including North Camden, Cramer Hill, Parkside, Morgan Village, and Fairview. With these trail and streetscape upgrades, Camden and the surrounding region will enjoy increased access to green space and recreation, as well as a new option for active transportation connecting residential neighborhoods to commercial and office corridors.
