M.C.R.P. Professional Report Requirement

Students matriculating in Fall 2007 or later
You must satisfy the professional report requirement by receiving a grade of “B” or better on a memo prepared in Methods of Planning Analysis II (34:970:516). The report will be structured as a short (about 10 pages) memorandum written in a professional style on a planning topic approved by the course instructor.

Students matriculating before Fall 2007

If you have not yet taken Methods of Planning Analysis II, when you take that course you will be able to satisfy the professional report requirement by writing a memo as described above.

If you have already taken Methods of Planning Analysis II, or you are exempt from taking it, then the previous requirement applies, as follows. You must identify a willing faculty reviewer with whom to work on your professional report. The report can be an extension of work already completed for a course, or based on a personal research interest, or a project completed through a center or institute. The faculty reviewer will outline in general terms any revisions or additional work that is needed. The finished report will be approximately 3,000 to 5,000 words (15 to 20 double-spaced pages), not including graphics and appendices. Reports can follow either an academic or practitioner format. Academic reports will follow the guidelines of the Journal of the American Planning Association, while practitioner reports will follow a format best suiting the topic, and approved by the faculty reviewer. Since the professional report is a requirement for graduation, it is important to keep track of submission dates. The key dates for May graduation are listed below. Students are responsible for observing these deadlines and submitting any necessary paperwork (attached), just as they would be in a professional organization. Note that students will not be allowed to register for their final semester unless the faculty advisor has a draft in hand.

Students matriculating before Fall 2003
You must satisfy the professional report requirement by writing, as part of the normal work in any graduate course, a sole-authored term paper that the instructor deems to be of acceptable quality. Or, if you have not yet taken Methods of Planning Analysis II, you may satisfy the requirement by taking that course and writing a memo, as described above.
