Established in 1997 with a generous gift from Applied Materials, Inc., the Center for Science, Technology, and Society has achieved recognition as a leading forum for research and public policy dialogue. It sponsors public colloquia and conferences, interdisciplinary research, curriculum development, and the semiannual journal STS Nexus. With ongoing programs in three areas - - Family and Community; Work and Organizations; and Law and Public Policy - - it has also begun to play a significant role in economic development issues through collaborations with the United Nations, the World Bank, and the Glocal Forum. It manages the judging of nominations for the Technology Benefiting Humanity Awards in partnership with the Tech Museum of Innovation. Situated in the heart of Silicon Valley, the Center aims to have an impact on both its region and the world.
