The higher education community does not yet play an important a role in educating its students and the general public about the importance of environmental sustainability. We believe that it should. College campuses represent a rich but largely untapped opportunity for demonstrating the principles and practices of sustainability. Campuses could lead by example.
A consortium
of New Jersey's public higher education institutions is siezing the opportunity
to begin undoing past environmental damage and implementing sustainable
practices. This is the first state-based effort of its kind
in the United States, and we hope it serves as a model for other states.
Consortium members include Bergen, Kean, Montclair, NJIT, Ramapo, Rutgers,
Stevens, and the non-profit Second Nature.
