Center Projects
Reuse of U.S. Nuclear Weapons Sites
Since 1995, the Center has participated in a multi-year grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to the Consortium for Risk Evaluation with Stakeholder Participation (CRESP). As an original member of the consortium, Center staff have worked in close partnership with both federal officials at the DOE and colleagues from half a dozen other universities to tackle complex issues surrounding the cleanup and reuse of the nation's highly contaminated former nuclear weapons facilities. The Center has been instrumental in helping the DOE develop long-term stewardship programs and end-state land use planning processes and tools that emphasize risk analysis and risk communication. We have produced more than 200 reports and articles that analyze important issues affecting the effectiveness of DOE cleanup projects.
