Elizabethport residents spend a large portion of their disposable incomes outside the community. Less than one-fifth of consumer expenditures are made at local businesses. These figures indicate that there is an enormous amount of unmet demand in Elizabethport and that the community could support a wide variety of stores that offer quality goods and services at reasonable prices. Brand New Day should focus its efforts on meeting community needs in a few key areas: basic apparel, groceries, and personal convenience goods.
Although this was not within the scope of our study, it would be prudent for Brand New Day to utilize its strategic location next to the Metromall and IKEA expansion and position itself to take advantage of the major economic activity to be generated. These retail centers will require support services for the needs of both retailers and customers, such as cleaning services and security. As stated earlier, local preferences will be given in hiring, contracts and procurement. Brand New Day could, in cooperation with local residents and organizations, start these small business services. Persons from the neighborhood could be found with related employment experiences or those desiring to become entrepreneurs and Brand New Day could sponsor them under the organization's structure. This would enable Brand New Day to meet these retail support needs and, by using its standing in the community, advocate the establishment of such services be done by neighborhood residents.
