Conclusion

Newark is a city of unrealized promise. At first glance, the city seems overwhelmed by the problems we call the Newark Mystique. The best way to challenge this perception is through direct and prolonged study of the subject. Throughout the course of this research, the city’s negative image has been broken down piece by piece. The economic development team spent many hours walking the streets, meeting merchants and residents. The information collected through quantitative research and informal discussion refutes the claim that Newark is a dying city.

A great deal of information was collected about the study area through the physical inventory and the survey process with business owners. The data was analyzed from several perspectives. The results told a story about a very committed business community. Many of the community’s business owners live close by, employ area residents, own their buildings, contribute to the neighborhood, and have plans to expand. The anecdotal evidence collected by surveyors confirmed that the study area has islands of strength. Nodes of thriving businesses and activities were identified and confirmed through the research. Individual merchants offered to help and asked for help. The primary research, combined with secondary research and interviews with business development experts indicates a promising future. The economic development team believes that CHDC has a unique opportunity to capitalize on their community’s potential.

The West Side Park community contains multiple assets necessary to overcome the challenges prevalent in urban neighborhoods. CHDC should build on the islands of strength, supporting and encouraging their growth. The anchor businesses should, in turn, assist other community proprietors. In-fill development is also recommended. However, the character of the original buildings should be maintained. Buildings should be restored whenever possible and new construction should reflect the history of two of Newark’s most important commercial corridors: Springfield Avenue and South Orange Avenues. There are reasons to hope in the CHDC target area, the challenge is to organize and harness the energy of its people.
