Appendix 4: Summary of Digital Data

Geographic Information Systems Data

The maps created for this report were created with geographic information system (GIS) data, using ESRI’s ArcView software package. The base maps of the Corinthian study area were created with TIGER road files from the U.S. Census. Geographically-specific results from the two surveys, such as problem areas locations, as well as areas avoided by residents using West Side Park, were mapped by creating new themes in ArcView. These were created both in polygon and point form, for areas and specific locations respectively. The project file (crimeos.apr) contains the maps for each set of survey results, as well as layout designs for hardcopies.

Survey Results Databases

Results for each of the two surveys (survey results.xls) were compiled in spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel. Each survey is contained in a separate sheet. Portions of each survey were copied into the report document in MS Word to augment discussion of the particular results.

Volunteer Database

The volunteer database (volunteer addresses.xls) was also compiled in Microsoft Excel. The spreadsheet contains entries for each field provided by contact information portion of the surveys. It is designed not only to display this information, but to be used as the data source for a mail merge in Microsoft Word for creating mailing lists and labels. The relevant fields for a mail merge are name, address1, address2.
