Information about the Program/Organization and its Participants

Description of purpose and services offered to the community:
The Financial Aid/Student Employment Office administers the Federal Work Study(FWS)/Community Service Program. This is a federally funded program that provides employment opportunities to eligible students who are awarded these funds. Student participation in community service projects that benefit the community and provide a meaningful work experience is encouraged.

Community Service Areas:

Target Populations: Youths, Adults and Senior Citizens.

Service Providers: Undergraduate Students and Graduate Students.

Fees: None.

Eligibility Restrictions:
Students must be FWSP recipients. Project must include Rutgers faculty or staff involvement.


Program/Organization's Work in the New Brunswick Community

The Student Employment Office has worked with:
o Alcohol Studies-Programs for Addictions Consultation and Treatment(PACT)
Graduate students in clinical psychology, social work and counseling psychology provide screening and counseling services to patients admitted to St. Peter's Hospital for drug and/or alcohol abuse.
o Citizenship and Service Education(CASE)
Undergraduate students serve as team leaders for CASE volunteers and as liasions between community partner organizations and the university. Graduate students provide supervision for team leaders and serve as Student Organizations Coordinator, Community Relations Coordinator, and Special Projects Coordinator.
o Center for Urban Policy Research(CUPR)
An undergraduate student assistant helps to maintain internet web pages for departments involved in community service projects.
o Graduate School of Education. Professional Development School
Several undergraduate students provide academic tutoring for grades K-8th at the Lincoln School. A GSE graduate student serves as mentor and general supervisor for the tutoring staff.
o Graduate School of Education(NJEISS)
Graduate and undergraduate students provide assistance in conducting a comprehensive study of families with an infant or toddler with a developmental delay or diagnosed disability
o Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology
Second year GSAPP students provide outpatient psychological counseling services to community residents.
o Nutritional Sciences, Children's Community Garden
Student assistants work with inner-city children to maintain an organic garden. The program emphasizes environmental education, cultural awareness and recycling.
o Rutgers Cooperative Extension
Students provide assistance with the producation of educational videos, slides, and displays for farmers, landscapers and home gardeners.

We are interested in expanding all areas of our FWS-Community Service Program in order to provide a wide range of service opportunities for our students.

Additional Information and Comments:
We encourage Rutgers faculty and staff to contact the Student Employment Office to discuss using FWS Students on your community service project. Our students offer a wide range of skills, interests and abilities. Students are paid through the FWSP.
