Energy and Land Use

Land use and site/building design to maximize current and projected energy resources! What is the fate of the distant suburbs? Will the inner cities be revitalized? Will suburbs look the same? What is the housing type and unit size of the future? How will buildings be oriented? How do we develop energy-sensitive land use controls? Can we agree on solar access? What is the energy-environment interface? Can a city help itself to be energy self-reliant? These are the issues addressed by these invited papers solicited by the Center for Urban Policy Research and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Prominent urbanists, natural resource personnel, land use attorneys, members of the development community, public utility heads and energy regulatory commission members in these specially prepared papers, provide a framework to encourage and provide for energy-efficient land use, for location choice, site design, alternative building forms, and fuel sources.
