Job description

The Department is currently seeking an assistant professor in public policy and governance. Research and teaching in public policy at the UvA emphasizes processes and institutions of policy making and governance in a historical and sociological context, with attention to the influence of transnational developments and the importance of a comparative perspective. Ongoing research in the Department is oriented towards the policy challenges posed by contemporary social problems, and by the demands of a changing, transnational institutional landscape, from the expanding role of the European Union to climate change, sustainability and associated regimes.

This open position aims to strengthen our capacity for research and teaching with a specific interest in the design and functioning of actual practices of public administration and governance in transnational society. While we are looking for somebody with sound expertise on the Dutch political-administrative system, essential is a capacity to explicitly address the transnational features of contemporary problems in domains such as regional developments, migration and integration and sustainable development and governance. An interest in international comparison is appreciated. She or he should help students develop a repertoire of insights to appreciate, and deal with, the everyday ‘politics’ (powering, legitimizing, trust building) involved on the ‘shop floor’ of policy making.

The vacancy will be situated in the research programme Transnational Configurations, Conflict and Governance. Central in the programme is to re-examine established notions of identities, categorizations and boundaries defined by classical political science concepts through investigating contemporary practices in their changing institutional context.

Tasks

developing, conducting and possibly supervising high quality research on novel practices of governance and policy making with explicit interest in the transnational nature of these practices and the problems they address;
teaching courses on contemporary practices of public administration in transnational society; as well as, at least in the medium-term, core courses within the public policy and governance curriculum;
(participation in) the acquisition of research funding;
an energetic contribution to the research programme of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research and to the development of the field through scholarly publications and participation in national and international research networks.

Requirements

Candidates should have:

a PhD degree, training in political science, public policy, or a related field, and a publication record that includes articles in international peer-reviewed journals;
a thorough working knowledge of the political-administrative system in the Netherlands and demonstrated competence in studying it, preferably within a comparative perspective, and/or with attention to transnational processes;
a demonstrated interest in political-administrative practices in transnational society;
proven teaching experience;
a capacity to teach, at least in the medium-term, core courses within the public policy and governance curriculum more generally;
a capacity to teach in English or Dutch, and a willingness to learn Dutch within two years.

Conditions of employment

In accordance with our employment policies, you will be offered a temporary contract for three years, with conditions for tenure thereafter agreed upon appointment. The gross yearly salary (including 8% holiday pay and an 8,3% end of year payment) will be between €44.589 and €69.361, based on a full-time appointment and depending on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
