| Overview
The Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center (VTC) at Rutgers,
The State University of New Jersey, is a national leader
in the research and development of innovative transportation
policy.
One of thirteen research centers within the Edward
J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers,
VTC brings to bear the full array of resources of a major
research university on transportation issues of regional and
national significance. VTC includes the National Transit Institute,
which was created by Congress in 1992 to design and deliver
training and education programs for the nation’s transit
industry.
The Voorhees Transportation Center, by virtue of its New Jersey
location, is well suited to address many of the critical transportation
issues confronting the nation. The most densely populated
state in the nation, New Jersey is crisscrossed by major interstate
highways and toll roads, a fully developed network of commuter
railroads, light rail lines and bus routes, deepwater seaports,
freight railroads and international airports.
Within this living laboratory, VTC explores the role of transportation
in economic development, land use, political governance, finance
and social policy. It is the center’s goal to facilitate
informed public debate of major transportation policy decisions
by simplifying and clarifying the issues at stake.
The Voorhees Transportation Center has developed specialized
expertise in transit-oriented development, bicycle and pedestrian
transportation, intercity and commuter rail, truck and rail
freight movement, community outreach, safety issues involving
the elderly, and the emerging role of passenger ferry service.
VTC Director Martin E. Robins, whose transportation planning
experience spans three decades, oversees the Center's faculty
and staff, who collectively bring 150 years of experience
in transportation. Prior to joining VTC, Mr. Robins was Director
of Planning & Development for the Port Authority of New
York and New Jersey, and Deputy Executive Director of NJ TRANSIT.
National Transit Institute
NTI was created at Rutgers under the Intermodal Surface Transportation
Efficiency Act of 1991 to develop, promote, and deliver training
and education programs for the public transit industry. NTI
receives funding from the Federal Transit Administration and
in 1999 became part of the Voorhees Transportation Center.
