The New Jersey Department of
Transportation has awarded the Alan M. Voorhees Transportation
Center a grant to study the effectiveness of New Jersey's
system of heliports, helipads, and helistops. In the nation's
most densely populated state, these facilities have become
increasingly important for personal and business travel, as
well as for medical evacuation.
New Jersey has over 365 heliports. While many
of these are for official-use only (for example, by the New
Jersey State Police), there are over 250 private heliports
throughout the state used by both corporations and private
citizens. All but one of the state's heliports are privately
owned and managed.
Does this system meet the needs of New Jersey's residents?
A VTC research team will attempt to uncover the answer.
