New resources available in the SRTS Getting Started Toolbox

Beginning a Safe Routes to School

program can seem like an overwhelming task. Fortunately, three new resources in the New Jersey Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School “Getting Started” Toolbox make new program launches a little bit easier. The Toolbox provides information on launching a New Jersey SRTS program to all community partners, including educators, law enforcement, public officials and residents.

The new SRTS Travel Plan Guide provides an easy-to-follow introduction to producing SRTS travel plans, including example travel plan format and content. The travel plan serves as a basis for SRTS funding and can help a community organize its plans for SRTS projects.

The new Walk and Bike to School Events fact sheet provides tips, hints and advice for planning successful walk and bike to school events. These types of events enhance SRTS programs by encouraging more children to bike and walk and by

involving the public in the SRTS process.

The recently updated Evaluating Your SRTS Program guide offers simple ways to assess walking and cycling conditions in your neighborhood. The guide includes two surveys, the Student Tally Survey helps track the number of students walking and bicycling and the Parental/Caregiver Survey identifies parental concerns and is presented in both English and Spanish.
